Derbyshire Trusted Trader was set up in November 2008. The Derbyshire Trusted Trader scheme is run by Derbyshire trading standards in order to help people find trustworthy and reliable traders within the area. It covers all manner of traders, from builders and plumbers to tree surgeons and roofers. For a trader to join the Derbyshire trusted trader scheme, they must fulfil certain obligations such as adhering to consumer protection legislation and providing good customer service.
Traders who operate within this scheme must notify the trusted trader program about any civil court judgements, convictions, or current legal proceedings related to their business, and convictions regarding dishonesty and fraud mean preclusion from the scheme. Members of the trader program must refrain from engaging in cold calling. The scheme sees this as a pressure tactic that rogue traders employ against the elderly; vulnerable pressure selling tactics are also precluded.
Members of the scheme are, of course, required to be fully insured for public liability and indemnity insurance when applicable.
Some traders must also possess a waste carriers license if applicable. The work should be provided with reasonable skill and care and concluded in a good time, and members should be as flexible as possible on the date and time for the customer. They should also provide their service at a reasonable cost.
On completion of work, members of the scheme provide a feedback card for completion by the customer. This feedback is generally then published on the trusted trader website so that users of the site can gauge the quality of the services provided by trusted trader members.
Regarding complaints regarding work carried out, members must first try to resolve the matter with the customer. If a resolution is not forthcoming, then the member would refer the client to trading standards so that they can obtain impartial advice. The member would then work with trading standards to come to a resolution.
